Background
Ravi Karunanayake (born in 1963) completed his school education at St. Thomas' Preparatory School, Kollupitiya and Royal College, Colombo.[1]He is a member of the Parliament from the Colombo district since 1994 representing the United National Party (UNP), one of the two main political parties in Sri Lanka.[2]

Meeting the All Ceylon Cigarette Tobacco Barn Owners' Association

Proposing a request for LKR 500 Million from the Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) for tobacco and drug control in Sri Lanka
During his presentation of the budget proposals for 2017, Minister Karunanayake proposed to obtain “a donation” of LKR 500 million from the Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) to fund the Presidential Task Force for Drug Prevention (PTFDP). PTFDP, managed by the President’s Secretariat and funded by the Presidential Funds, is a main stakeholder in tobacco control in Sri Lanka. Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) is the British American Tobacco (BAT) subsidiary that holds the monopoly of manufacturing and trading cigarettes in Sri Lanka. The proposal was publicly criticised based on the claim that it was a direct violation of Articles 13 and 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).[9][10]For more details visit FCTC Article 13: Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship.
