Plot of Land to be leased to Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC)

Media reported that the Ministers of Cabinet has approved to lease a plot of land from Maduwanwela Nindagam Watte to Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) for a forest farming project. The land, in the extent of 87 acres 3 roods and 25 perches of the Maduwanwela Nindagama Watte that is owned by the Land Reforms Commission, will be on a long-term lease for a period of 30 years. Reportedly, the Minister of Tourism and Lands Harin Fernando presented the proposal to release the plot of land.[2] Media further reported that “this approval was given after careful evaluation of the project report” submitted by CTC.[3][4][5]

Impact

Plethora of scientific evidence have revealed the negative impact of Tobacco cultivation on the environment including deforestation and water pollution. Tobacco cultivation, whether it is forest farming or not, and tobacco products have negative impacts on economic development globally by causing premature deaths and tobacco induced diseases. News articles on the lease of the land received a wide print and online media coverage. [3][4][5] Daily FT, a national newspaper in Sri Lanka, reported the lease of the land under the title of “Ceylon Tobacco secures 87 acre land on 30-year lease for sustainable forest farming”.[6] Tobacco companies are well known for their involvement in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in order to gain leverage in interference in tobacco control actions and policies and also to whitewash their image and reputation. Article 5.3 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) recommends measures to the Parties to protect their public health policies from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry.
