CTC Providing Water for the Drought Affected Families
Background
Sri Lanka experienced the worst drought in 40 years in the year 2016. People in 16 districts were affected and a vast area of agricultural lands has been destroyed. According to the Disaster Management Center, as of 21st February 2017, 899,235 people of 228,906 families from 103 Divisional Secretariat Divisions were affected. The situation was worst in the Dry Zone, in which most of the tobacco cultivations are situated in Sri Lanka.[1]
Social Investment
According to media reports, Ceylon Tobacco Company donated 1000 drinking water bottles to over 500 drought affected families in tobacco cultivation areas in Madirigiriya and Elahera (Image 1).[2][3][4]
Impact
As reported, CTC’s coverage was less than 0.2% (500/228,906) of the affected population. However, at least three newspapers (two Sunday newspapers and one daily newspaper) reported the activity as a “CSR initiative by the CTC staff to support the rural communities”.[2][3][4] It was also reported as a continuation of the CTC’s strategy to;
- foster “passion, enthusiasm and team work among its employees”[2]
- implement “strategic and sustainable CSR”[2]
